Topsy Turvy Cake Homeclass Saturday May 8, 2010

Salam again, everyone!
(Warning: THIS BLOG IS QUITE LENGTHY)

Today, Chef Baini had a homeclass for the TOPSY TURVY CAKE or sometimes known as the MAD HATTER'S CAKE. It's very obvious why the cake got it's name.

Chef Baini decided to take this class to a different level this time. She had each student  think of their design and sketch them out using pen and paper, because Chef Baini wanted her students to think of themselves as CAKE DESIGNERS. Okay, the sketches may not be great works of art, but look at what they produced: The sketch gave a formative idea or concept for the cake to take shape.

This is the sketch that one such student actual drew. But take a look at the cake that she did below!

(Aren't the pumpkins just dandy!! Great job!)

Because this particular kind of cake is all about design. This cake's RAISON D' ETRE (or Reason For Being in English; by the way, this phrase is borrowed from French Philosophy jargon, specifically from the very eminent french philosopher Voltaire) is all about contrast; it is a cake that screams for your attention.

It is a cake that is meant to stand out, to stand apart, an out-of-the-ordinary cake that contravenes the normal expectations and conventions of cake design.

So today Chef Baini wants to show her students' work by showcasing each cake and the effort that they put in to produce their
Magnum Opus! (Great work!)

Here we go.....

Chef Baini thinks most everyone who follows her blog would be quite familiar with the process by now......

Chef Baini wants to give a true impression on the amount of work that went into the making of these cakes. Chef Baini wants to pay tribute to her students' dedication and diligence to cakecraft! They deserve their due as this blog is not just about Chef Baini, its about the students and what they achieve once they put the hard work into it.

And here's another student's great work....

You'd probably remember this lovely young lady from previous blog entries......
Chef Baini would have you know, she picks up things pretty fast!...
By the look on her face, you can see that she is designing the cake in her head.....

Another one by another regular student.....
Notice that this particular designer opts for a more simple design...
but it does not mean that the cake won't by any less attractive!

First, the cake is sculpted and prepared...its coated so that the fondant layer will stick to it....

Camaraderie is a natural by-process of cake making...
True Artists are never selfish....

Focus, concentration cannot be avoided...the cake simply forces you to do so....

Look at the seriousness...this student eagle-eyed her details,
making sure nothing escapes her attention.....

Here is another masterpiece.....

The 'Blades of Grass' on the bottom tier make for strong contrast,
and the wavy nature of the blades gracefully lends
the whimsical character of the Topsy Turvy cake.....

Now this one (below) is quite striking, don't you think?
Even though it uses just a dark grey and white contrast.

This colour combination has an almost gothic quality about it.....

And finally,

Love as always,

Chef Baini...

P.S. I hope this blog wasn't too long...

P.P.S. I hope you caught the pun....Love (valentines) on the cake and Love as always..; )
