HOMECLASS - KELAS KEK LAPIS 18TH JULY 2010

Salam Friends!

Chef Baini is back again only this time with her first  
Kek Lapis and Roll homeclass. 

(For Chef Baini's international followers, the Kek Lapis and Lapis Roll 

translate to Layered Cake and Layered Rolls in English.

These multi-coloured confections are very eye-catching and 

are usually served on festivals and special occasions. 

They are also favourite gifts on those said occassions.)

As you can see from the above picture, these are the cakes that 

were made by the students today. 

Why, today's class also included a chapter on how to wrap the cake so it'll last longer. 

Trivial as this may seem, Chef Baini makes it a point to teach all the finer details;

After all: The Devil is in the details!

Here are pictures of the class hard at work....

Of course, you will need the required tools to cut and shape the

intricate patterns that give the Kek Lapis it's unique character...

The 'L' angles used as straightedges for cutting the cakes

can be purchased at your nearest Bagus Bakery Shop. They are very cheap...

less than RM 5 each. (RM=Ringgit Malaysia. I USD= RM 3.60).

You'll need only one!

The lady on the left in the brown niqab is none other than

Chef Baini's mom! Today she filled in for Ima and 

played the Chef's assistant!

(No prizes for guessing who is the lady in the red T-shirt!)

Today's class finished on schedule...

everyone was done before 6 pm.

Chef realised that if the students were well organised,

then things will go much smoother and faster!

 So here's how to organise the baking station...

(Of course, you can do much better than some of Chef's students!)

 

 As for the oven, why, an electric mini oven will do..

you don't need  a normal sized one...

Batching bowls, ladles and trays....

You can see very clearly here that after each batter is laid and spread (evenly)

in the baking pan, it goes in the oven for 2 minutes and the pan is removed from the

oven for the next layer to be laid...

This process is repeated again and again until 

the desired thickness is attained...

That's right, folks...its a very tedious and time-consuming process...

Little wonder the cakes sell for much more than others!

Lastly, Chef Baini wants to record her appreciation to

Kak Nor, for graciously giving everyone (including Chef Baini) 

today a pair of magnetic picture frames
