CHOCOLATE MODELLING HOMECLASS on 22nd May, 2011

Today's homeclass was on one of Chef Baini's favourite subjects......CHOCOLATE! Yes, today Chef Baini had 3 friends over for a session on chocolate modelling. They came to learn the rudiments of chocolate decoration which is the same as if you were making a wedding cake, but instead of buttercream or fondant, the medium is chocolate. Sunday was also a very hot day and that made the class a little more challenging as extra care had to be taken to make sure the chocolate, once modelled into roses and leaves and what-have-you won't melt under the heat! Yes, the operative word is melt, not wilt!

So without further ado, lets meet the three ladies who came to spend their Sunday with Chef Baini....up above is Lyn......

This fair damsel is Gee; she came all the way for Kuantan to learn with Chef Baini today......

And last but not least, is Shook Ling....If you read the blog post on yesterday's class (on the Introduction to Fondant Homeclass), you may have noticed Shook Ling.....Yes, she spent the weekend with Chef Baini, although she is a bit shy and would rather not have her picture be taken!

Most of you would have read Chef Baini's promo on this class...its on the blog page, on the right hand side. In that write-up, Chef Baini mentioned the zany lead character Willy Wonka from the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Most of you would have seen it, it was an international smash hit! For those of you who are literature buffs, Chef Baini need not mention  that the movie was based on Roald Dahl's children's classic book by the same name.

Of course, the lead character Willy Wonka was played to unforgettable heights by the incomparable Johnny Depp, probably one of Hollywood's most gifted actors!

BUT.....

Chef Baini would wager all her (Chocolate) guilders that very few of you would know that the recent movie starring Johnny Depp is in fact, a remake! The original Charlie and the Chocolate factory was released in 1971, and the lead character of Willy Wonka was played by Gene Wilder, one of the funniest actors of his generation! Here is Gene Wilder in the starring role below....

Gene Wilder's most famous movies (and the most hilarious) are SILVER STREAK (1976) and STIR CRAZY (1980) where he teamed up with his equally famous comedian partner, the late Richard Pryor. Notice the river of chocolate in the background. Below is the original movie poster.....

So for posterity's sake, here is a picture of they Wonka of yesteryear and the Wonka of just a few years ago.......

And while we're at it, above is the Charlie of the recent movie, and below is the original Charlie!

Finally, here is a picture of the original movie's cast!

Chef Baini hopes you've enjoyed the little sideline from today's blog! Here at NORBAINI CAKES blogspot, we try to make each post as interesting and original to keep all our friends interested to continue reading this blog!

So lets return to the class, shall we, to see what the three  ladies produced at the end of the day....

Most you you who have read the previous blogs on the chocolate modelling homeclass will be familiar with the cake, its design, effects and rendition. So Chef Baini won't dull you again by repeating the same thing! All Chef Baini wanted to say is: WELL DONE LADIES! GREAT JOB TODAY!

Well, that's all for today's blog post, dear friends! Chef Baini hopes that you enjoyed reading it as much as you would have eating chocolate!

CHOCOLATE MODELLING CLASS ON 9th NOVEMBER 2010

Welcome once more to Norbaini Cakes!
Chef Baini is delighted, as always, to have you visit her humble blog. Today, a feeling of deja vu hits the bones as another chocolate modelling class follows the last class at Chef Baini's home. Oh, in case you're wondering why there is a few days' gap from the last class, its because the last weekend (6 & 7 of November) Chef Baini decided to take a short break and not have any classes. For a change, Chef & family went to the park, caught a movie and generally goofed around. But chocolate happiness immediately ensued and so this past Tuesday the 9th of November, another small group of chocolateers dropped in to learn chocolate modelling.

No, this isn't really a picture of Chef Baini's home, but it sure feels like it when chocolate happiness spreads around! You will know, of course, that chocolate contains a certain chemical that releases the happy hormones that make us feel good. Chocolate Therapy, as some people call it; Chef Baini wonders how long it will take before somebody opens up a Chocolate Spa!

Since its only been a few days from the last blog entry; notwithstanding on the same subject, lets skip the details and get straight to see this batch of participants having a go at making chocolate roses et al.

First up, there's Kak Yan....

Next, there's Saiba (my, doesn't she look happy!)...She's got a brilliant smile, don't you think so?

Finally, the third Chocolateer for today is Zai.....

So lets see how they did....

Chef Baini thinks the Three Chocolateers did splendidly! As this was the second chocolate modelling class in a row, everyone was done by 3pm. Fabulous! And that included the lunch break, too!

Now it wouldn't be a Norbaini Cakes blogpost if it didn't include a compendium of step-by-step pictures of the chocolate making process, would it? So here it is....Believe it or not, its as easy as it looks!

Now you can go too town with the edible gold paint, which someone did! Won't say who, though! Can you imagine eating gold chocolate roses? How's that for decadence!

Before you know it, class ended and its one of those rare days when the class ended well before the sun set! Thank you all for visiting today, dear friends; its always a pleasure to have you visit Norbaini Cakes. See you again, and very soon!

CHOCOLATE MODELLING HOMECLASS on 3rd NOVEMBER 2010

Salam, Everyone!

Welcome to another Norbaini Cakes blog post! Today's subject is chocolate modelling, that is, making flowers, leaves and vines out of chocolate to dress up your chocolate cake. Just like people, cakes also must dress up in order to look good, just like the fashionable looking business people in the welcome banner above! Even the car - a 1957 Ford Thunderbird - (some of you may remember it from the 1979 Grease Movie) looks great and beckons you to step inside to take it for a spin. First impressions count for a lot and we first eat with our eyes. If it looks good, then it should taste good as well.

Think of it this way: A well presented cake that is pleasing to the eye is an invitation to eat!

Today's class had just 3 students, but these were experts. Today's class was just about modelling, so Chef Baini skipped the baking the cake part. Today's participants already knew how to bake a oreo chocolate cake, and bake it well!

First up, we have  AIN....

Look at how AIN emphasizes the flowers in her creation..straight line centre, with a gold accents on the edge of the petals and leaves.

Next up is KAK ITA....some of you may know her, as she is a veteran in the cake business...

As you can see, KAK ITA is very elaborate in her creation. Roses and Ribbons and little gold beads, all strategically placed where she wanted them to be...

Not to be outdone is SIS LEA; whom, by the way, came from from Ipoh to be here today...

See how SIS LEA designed her creation as a centrepiece; it looks the same from any angle. Of course, its easier since the cake is round in it's shape!

You'd expect it by now...any class with SIS LEA in it must have a separate visual featuring you-know-who!

Class was done by 3pm...which is great for SIS LEA as she has a 2 hour journey back home on the North-South Highway! But before going home, SIS LEA insisted on a picture with KAK ITA! Well, as the saying goes, "If thou insist, I shall not resist!".

That's all for today, dear friends!
Chef Baini hopes you enjoyed reading today's blog,
and looking at the cakes that were done by today's students.

Until next time, which should be very soon!

Love always,

Chef Baini.

Chocolate Modelling Homeclass 10/04/2010

Salam Everyone!

Chef Baini is back, this time with a batch of new students for the chocolate modeling class.
Here are the students and the results of their work:

In Chef Baini's previous blog, artistic creativity was emphasized a crucial element in the success of the cakes.
Today, Chef stressed on the individuality of the designer,
whereby the cake created by the artist embodies the soul of the artist in her creation.

Of course, it's quite a trick to guesstimate the personalities of the cake artist by just looking at the final 'piece de resistance'; this is a cake decoration blog and not Psychology 101!
Nevertheless, Chef Baini believes that if you know the person well enough,
you will immediately understand the cake and why it is the way it is!

For instance: the amount of gold highlights on the chocolate, especially on the roses,
tells a lot about the artist whom created the cake!

and here are the scenes of the day while class is in session!
Thanks for dropping by!

Love, Chef Baini.
